Creating an EP is a fabulous goal, but it’s not necessarily a great goal for a class. The reason is, in a class environment, we want you taking chances, we want you making mistakes, we want you trying new things. And if every decision is tied up with, “Is this going to sound good on my record?” it’s going to discourage you from learning and growing.
The thing that will really help you with your EP is a community around you to help you and support you, to give you feedback, and to lift you up on those times when you’re feeling down. Because, let’s face it, it’s hard. But making an EP itself, that’s a manageable goal.
Just remember that, unless you have the brain trust of a label, and engineers, and songwriters, and mixers, and mastering engineers behind you, that EP is going to be a snapshot. It’s a snapshot of where you are right now. You’re going to look back at it in time and realize that you’ve grown.
But your listeners, and your fans, and the people who love you are going to love you for that snapshot, not in spite of it.
