Producers have this habit of trying to understand music theory without understanding one really basic thing, which is form. The elements of music include melody and rhythm, and then there’s arrangement, and then of chorus there’s harmony, which is like chords. And most people want to start there because it’s the thing they understand the least, but the place to start is form.
Without a really clear idea of how section breaks and repetition are being used, all those other elements are going to seem completely random. Almost as if you’re looking at a long string of numbers like this, and you can’t see the pattern. The real beauty here is that if you listen to music, you already have the skills to start unpacking this and applying it to other things.
So we have a class coming up called the Musician Basic Elective. It’s sort of a basic music theory class, and if you’d like a spot, please reach out.
