This morning in the region we looked at Stevie Wonder “Isn’t She Lovely?” There’s a lot this song can teach us, but we have time to talk about the first four chords. Keep a close eye on my thumb and notice how it descends in half steps. Notice also that the shape of the last chord is identical to the shape of the first chord.
That’s a little deceptive because this shape is serving two different functions in two different places. One small change and this rootless A minor 7 with a 9 becomes a D7 with a 13. Keep the melody on top and this F6 is really a G sus in disguise.
Resolve it to a C6 which is the same shape as the A minor 9. It begins to make a little more sense when we add the bass. There’s another chord I’m dying to talk about, but it’ll have to wait for another day.
Till then, be kind to one another and share this with someone who belongs in a Beat Kitchen class.
