There’s nothing more fun than walking our students through the songs they love. What a fabulous song to bring into music to reach it. I don’t have an hour to spend on it here, but let’s put some of the highlights under your fingers.
If you’re learning your way around harmony, this may be a lot to unpack, but it’s accessible. For pretty much the whole song, the chords don’t change. You can figure that out without a piano, just by singing your way up and down the scale.
♪ La la la la ♪ Three, two, one. Some of this will be easier for a beginner to visualize in the key of C. Consider how much the one and the sixth look alike.
True for the two and the four as well. And so when you get a pattern that repeats over chords like this, the notes stay fresh. These notes going back and forth mean different things at different times.
The identical vocal harmony makes sense over the entirety of the chord progression. It’s like how you can read a book and come back to it and read it again. It’s the same book, but you’ve changed them, also keeps things fresh.
♪ La la la la ♪ Three, two, one. Pre-chorus. One, da da da da.
When the chorus drops, everything lands on the down beat. Pink Pony Club. On top of all that, I think it’s just good writing.
There’s a compelling story and I care about the character. And little Easter eggs like rhyming Pony Club with Hollywood. I don’t care if it’s trendy, that’s what I like about it.
They understood the assignment. Chef’s kiss, one. Ten out of ten.
