The Fifth is Optional

Music TheoryChord TheoryMusic Education

A chord has a root, a third and a fifth, but the fifth it’s in there whether you play it or not. It’s part of the harmonic/overtone series, so in a complex chord, you can feel free to omit it if you like. It’s of little consequence. You can share that with someone who belongs in a Beat Kitchen class.
