Today, I’m ripping apart my studio. It’s something I do periodically. I’m happy to share my thoughts with you about its design and shortcomings, but what I really wanted to share with you was this.
Cable management. I have always wanted to be one of these people who have beautiful cabling running everywhere. That’s not ever really gonna happen.
But this is waxed thread and this is called a lacing tool. The technique is called cable lacing and it goes back to a time before we had velcro and plastic zip ties. This waxed string, it’s a little bit sticky and it grips.
There are at least three different methods. NASA, Western Union, Bell, all three of these had their own style for doing this and I’m terrible at all of them. But that’s not gonna prevent me from showing you how it works and why I like it.
Not only does it allow you to save money on things like velcro ties, it allows you to enter and exit cables from your bundle as needed. We start with a little slipknot and we create a small length. We go around and then under.
That creates a little L and when you pull it because of the wax, it will lock down tight. The first couple are probably too far apart but here they are closer together. The beauty is when I come to a point where I want to bring a cable in or out, that’s where I place my lacing knot and the whole bundle stays neat and tidy.
I’ll probably just do a hack job of this myself and then get somebody in to show you how to do it properly. But look up cable lacing. It’s a lost art.
