Does a compressor operate on level or frequency? Yes. A compressor is obviously acting in the dynamics domain.
And while you might understand it to be turning down the loud stuff and bringing up the quiet stuff, it’s not splitting those signals into two different parts. A compressor is one knob. It’s turning the loud stuff and the soft stuff down at the same time.
But any evolving sound has different frequencies at different times. So if you turn the loud stuff down, when it’s playing the high stuff, it stands to reason. You’re going to have a signal with more low frequency content.
