You can try, but you can’t really separate frequency from level. For that matter, you can’t really separate anything from level. Because without level, you can’t hear anything.

It’s another reason why a lot of you have trouble hearing compression and understanding what it does. A compressor is obviously acting in the dynamics domain. And while you might understand it to be turning down the loud stuff and bringing up the quiet stuff, it’s not splitting those signals into two different parts.

A compressor is one nod. It’s turning the loud stuff and the soft stuff down at the same time. But any evolving sound has different frequencies at different times.

So if you turn the loud stuff down, when it’s playing the high stuff, it stands to reason. You’re going to have a signal with more low frequency content. Just like if you remove the high frequency content, you’ll likely get a less dynamic signal.

With audio, things are interrelated. Just like music production and music are related. It’s better taught holistically.

One thing’s for sure, these tube socks sure sound warm, don’t they? You can share that with someone who belongs in a Beat Kitchen class.
