I arrived in New York in the late 90s. I took a job in a recording studio. There was this engineer, a really old guy, so we’re repairing cables one day and he says to me, “, you can find the break in a cable by sticking it in your ear.” And I said, “What?” But it’s true.

Usually the break is right here at the sheath. But if the break is along the length of the cable, it’s almost impossible to find. Wrap the cable around the tip of your finger and you shove that puppy right in your ear.

When you were a kid, did you ever make a telephone with two tin cans and a piece of string? You’ll notice the cable conducts sound as you touch it. Inside the cable where there’s a break, there are two pieces of wire and as they touch, they’ll rub against each other.

That’ll make a little noise. Follow the length of cable with your hand and you’ll hear that click when you hit the spot. That’s the part that needs repair., it turns out you can learn a lot from old timers.

And if you think you can learn something from this one, follow us and check out
