A music production environment is a complex one. There are a lot of moving parts and you need to learn to understand them so you can steer the ship. But at the same time, nobody’s ever going to listen to your song and say, “Wow, the release time on that compressor was my favorite part.” So to be a good producer, you need to hold that knowledge in your head so it’s there when you need it, and then you need to selectively be able to forget it so you can hear music the way your listeners do.
