When you use a classic speed up or slow down effect to change the pitch of a sound, you’re preserving the relationship between the sound’s fundamental frequency and its resonance in a way that is unnatural and sometimes beautiful. If you were to change size every time you sang a different note, you might sound like this too, but your mass stays the same as your vocal folds tighten and loosen, and the resonant chamber of your mouth and throat operate within the same limits, creating a fixed set of what are called formants. Slowing a sound or speeding it up alters these and the results can be beautiful.
