These are the chords from Brad Wilson’s “God Only Knows.” The song’s originally an E, but we’ve moved it to C to conform to our ten chord toolkit. First of all, it’s a really interesting use of this 6/4 inversion., “I may not always love you.” And it puts us in G minor, but there’s a D minor, and that’s a 2 chord. And there’s your 5.
And the 2/5/1 lands us on that C in the 6/4 position. And now this G7 with a flat 9 disguised as an A flat diminished. There’s your C again.
And now this, the F# half diminished. It looks so much like the top of a D7 chord, but with one tiny move, it turns into an F and puts us right back where we started. Amazing.
