Is there a difference between level and volume? In audio engineering, the answer is yes. Is it important?
Maybe. To an audio engineer, the difference between level and volume is that level is where I set the fader, and volume is how loud you play it back. Level is exact.
It’s electrical, and it’s how I mix the colors. Volume is how much of that color you choose to put on your wall. Does it matter?
Yes and no. It’s a word that signals to your peers that you can be trusted because what you’re talking about. I try to teach my students the distinction because of how the word reflects on them.
It doesn’t actually mean what you’re talking about. We can usually figure out if what you’re talking about pretty quickly regardless of what you call it.
