Check this out and tell me if it makes sense to you. I’m synthesizing three different channels with a sine wave. Each one is tuned to 1K.

Onto the first track labeled LFO, I’m going to place an actual LFO. It’s a tremolo plug-in and it’s basically a VCA set to modulate the level up and down. The LFO modulation rate is 1 Hz, which means one time per second.

Now let’s look at these other two. Both of these oscillators are tuned to a pitch of 1000 Hz. That means 1000 times per second.

But if I detune the pitch of the second oscillator to a pitch of 1001, that means they have a difference of 1 Hz, which means one time every second, the second oscillator is going to go out of phase with the first. Now I’m going to cover them up and I’m going to play one of them. Is it the LFO or the detuned oscillator?

Leave your guess in the comments or type “I don’t know” and I’ll send it to you. But if this is where you’re at, the Beat Kitchen class for you is called effects synthesis and mixing and we’re taking enrollment now.
