Stop doing this to your microphone. If it’s feeding back you may know that this makes it worse, but the reason is kind of interesting. The easiest way to think about this is to consider the difference between our ribbon microphone and an omnidirectional microphone.

Typically a ribbon microphone is going to pick up from the front and the back, but not from the sides. The reason is that inside there’s a strip of metal kind of like this and it’s exposed all around, which means it’s going to pick up vibrations this way and this way, but this way, not so much. But the element in an omnidirectional microphone like this condenser is different.

It’s completely sealed. And because it’s sealed, it’s picking up changes in air pressure from all sides, which brings me back to the thing that you shouldn’t do. When you put your hand over the top of this directional microphone, you’re sealing it and you’re making it go omnidirectional and it’s going to feed back more than it did before.
