If you’re writing lyrics and melodies and having trouble setting them to chords, this video is for you. The process is called harmonization. Loosely speaking, it can just be thought as lining up the strong beats with the strong chord tones.

Those fundamental chord tones are going to serve as anchor points for a melody, and we’re going to place them on the strong beats. In most meters, strong beats are going to be 1 and 3. 1, 2, 3, 4.

But if you’re playing air piano and your hand is just like going like this, chances are that’s a good spot for a chord tune. This is a song and it needs some chords. My air piano instinct is telling me, “ba ba ba ba, ba ba ba ba ba ba.” Those are going to be my targets.

And for this demonstration, I’m going to pick one of the three chord tones, 1, 3, or 5, to land on one of those targets during those strong beats. These rules aren’t set in stone. Strong beats can be extended.

Strong tones can include other stuff. But this is a great way to get you started thinking about it. If this was helpful, please save this post, share it with someone, and follow us for more information on our upcoming workshops.
