(beep) - What’s happening here might not be exactly what you think. I’m taking the MIDI output of this keyboard - And I’m sending it into this synth. - The catch is I’m sending it over this XLR cable.

Who cares? Well, I do. For one, it’s cool.

It’s also kind of useful. - The MIDI spec calls for five pins, but only uses three of them. So out of pins one, two, three, and then four and five, MIDI only uses two, five, and four.

  • What that means is if you wire up an adapter, you can run MIDI over any three conductor cable like this or these or these. So why is that cool? For one thing, I’ve got plenty of 50 foot mic cables.

Good luck getting one of these over 16 feet or so. So if you turn this into this, you can run this through something like this. (clicking) Lots of application for this.

One of my favorites. So in a multi-room environment, if I need to be in here working with a vocalist, but all my MIDI sounds are in the control room, there’s really no way to get that USB MIDI signal through the law. A couple of disclaimers.

You’re gonna need two of these. One to turn the MIDI into whatever, and then another to turn whatever back into MIDI on the other side. I keep a couple of MIDI to XLR in my go bag.

It’s turned into a get out of jail free card more than once. Soldering a MIDI plug is a world of pain. Just cannibalize something like this, cut the ends, wire it up like this.

And oh yeah, I appreciate a like, and most of all, help me get this in front of somebody who belongs in a Beat Kitchen class.
