If you’re looking for a simple chord, one that sounds expensive, one that you’ll keep coming back to, look no further than this one. It’s a familiar face, and moving the top notes down to the bottom reveals that it also serves two functions. But the C major 7 with an A on the bottom becomes an A minor 9, and that provides a lot of extra flavor, particularly with these two notes rubbing together up here.

Such a deliciously easy chord to play. Move it down chromatically and you will instantly begin to see its utility. And this same basic shape can be used for all sorts of chords.

Swap it out for a major 7, or change just one or two of these notes, and you’ve got a 2-5-1 progression, and a whole lot more. Share this post with someone who belongs in a Beat Kitchen class, and let’s talk about how to turn these voicings into a bop.
