Let’s clear up some of the noise around mixing in headphones and why maybe it’s not a great idea if you’re just starting out. Headphones are great for monitoring. They’re great for hearing detail and they’re wonderful for editing. But when you’re listening on speakers, your right ear hears the right speaker and the left speaker and that’s not true in headphones. What that means is when you’re wearing headphones, anything that’s panned to the center is going to be 3 dB quieter than it would be on speakers. That means things like your vocal, your snare, your kick drum, your bass. Experienced engineers do it, but we subconsciously adjust and if you’re just starting out, this creates an obstacle for you that you really don’t need.
