Michael Jackson’s Rock with You. It’s got these wonderful little polychord suspensions. You can play them from a third above or below, but imagine this as a G or an E minor over an A resolving to an A, and you can play this up and down the keyboard.
Play that A over a B and resolve it to a B, or the B over a C sharp resolve it to a C sharp. What you’re creating here are suspended chords and you’re gonna start hearing them everywhere, and watch as I start playing them as major 7s from a step below. F major 7 over G, G major 7 over A, A major 7 over B, B major 7 over C sharp, or move it up a minor 3, so it’s an A minor 7 over a G.
It’s still a G sus chord and you can move them around at will. This is such a handy little device. Approach your suspended chords from above or below, but either way there’s layers to this thing you’ll discover as it gets under your fingers, share it with someone who belongs in a Beat Kitchen class.
