I try not to think of this microphone as if it is pointed at me. It’s pointed away from you. This may strike you as a subtle distinction, and maybe it’s pedantic, but it’s a change in thinking that helped me, and so I’m sharing it with you in hopes that maybe it will help you.
When you aim a directional microphone, you are aiming the null. In this case, somewhere around here. You’re aiming it away from something you don’t want to pick up.
Try thinking of microphones in terms of the negative space, and if someone who belongs in our hardware and recording primer… Sure, I’m supposed to.
