It’s producer malpractice if you don’t do a quick gut check on the key of your song before you record that awesome vocal. You owe it to the vocalist, you owe it to yourself to check up and down a half step, a step, and even something extreme like a fourth or a fifth. You may find out you were in the right key all along which will be great news but it only takes a minute.
Making sure you’re in the right key has as much impact if not more on the tone of the voice and the choice of melody and octave than any plugin you’re going to choose or any tip or trick you’re going to read about and it’s just dead simple. Don’t let yourself get distracted by the shiny objects and if you want to get right with your vocal production or your music production follow Beat Kitchen and check out some of our classes and our workshops.
