Pretty much any experienced producer will understand the value of editing. But what most people want to think to tell you is there are at least three different editing sensibilities. I like to think of it as micro, macro, and meta.
And if you want to be a triple threat, you should understand all three. Micros like wielding a knife, making precise edits, but macro requires you to see the big picture. It means pulling the pieces together, creating an arrangement, moving things around, trimming the fat.
You can do one without the other, but you’re a better producer if how to do both. And so what about meta? Well, a good producer also knows when to leave things well enough alone because sometimes they’re good just the way they are.
