People tend to want to put their best foot forward when they come to class, but showing me how talented you are isn’t the same as taking a shower and fixing your hair and putting on a nice shirt. What I need to see is the opposite. I recently did this poll where I asked people, “What’s blocking you?” All I got was crickets.
And now that I think about it, the answer is obvious, because if you knew what was blocking you, then you would just be fixing it. So you don’t know what you don’t know. And to that effect, I need to see what you don’t know so that I can help you with it.
So feel free to take a shower, do your hair dress up if you like, but when you come to my class, be prepared to make a mess. My class is a safe place because nobody knows everything. However, if I can figure out some things that I know that you don’t, that’s going to help me get you unblocked.
