Do someone the great kindness of putting this little riff under their fingers. It’s easy and it’s the gift that keeps on giving. At its core I like to call this a plagal moment and it’s a motion from the one chord to the four chord.
We’re gonna look at it here in the key of C. The basic shape looks like this. It’s a quick move from C to F and back but because the C and the F both share this C we can leave this finger here so we swipe right for plagal.
But replace the root with the seventh of the chord and you’ve got soul for days. You can play it anywhere and everywhere. It works over both major and minor qualities and it’s a fabulous way to keep things feeling interesting over a single chord shape.
Add in a little left hand and a few variations of this and you’ve got enough to keep you busy for a really really long time. Check back later and I’ll show you how to swipe left for a perfect cadence and in the meantime you can share this with somebody who belongs in a big kitchen class. (soft piano music)
