Yesterday, during lab hours, one of our members shared a story about a challenging situation that came up in the industry because they’re a woman. Today, I posed a question on my story asking people to share similar experiences and I didn’t hear anything. I hadn’t checked this in a while, but oof, this is a real problem.
If this is what our account looks like, I can only imagine other people’s. As a school, Beat Kitchen SKU is a little better than this. Over a quarter of our members identify as female, but our membership is only about 40 people.
We’re tiny. It’s way better than anywhere else I’ve taught, but that doesn’t make it good. As a school, we want playmates, and it’s not nearly as much fun when everyone’s cut from the same cloth.
The only way I know how to diversify our student body is by diversifying our instructors. I don’t have another solution other than to let that if you really, really love to teach, if there’s an element of music production that you own, and if you can help lift someone up, we’d love to have you in our orbit. Particularly if you’re a woman, or if you’re queer, or trans, black, indigenous, disabled, whatever.
As a student, and especially as a teacher, you’re not just welcome here. We need you and we want the benefit of your perspective because without it, we’re going
