When was the last time you used something like this? Because inside of this you’re going to find four wires. Four perfectly good wires.

And that’s enough for, well, half of one of these. This old telephone adapter is an RJ11. It’s a modular plug and it’s actually capable of holding six connections.

It’s a little smaller than RJ45, which you might know as Ethernet. Did someone say Ethernet? Because that has eight connections and this shielded one has a ground.

And that’s enough for something like this. And now it’s time to talk about favorite tools like this endoscope, because anytime you’ve got a wall open, you should throw some Ethernet down there. And maybe some mic cable too.

A drill and some fishing tape. Stay clear of power lines. Pull more wire than you think you need.

More favorite tools. Gas powered soldering iron. Hard to put into words how convenient this thing is.

And it takes a lot of the headache out of a skill that every engineer should at least be familiar with. Oh yeah, remember to tie a knot in the cable so it doesn’t fall back through the hole. And here’s my favorite reversible screwdriver to button it all back up.

Take a little time to trick out your connections and your workflow. Well, thank you.
