Wheel Demo: Blackbird — voice leading and chord function

Wheel Demo: Blackbird

Paul McCartney gave us this Blackbird singing in the dead of night, and it’s such a wonderful little bit of voice leading. The thing is you may see these chords spelled a little differently in different transcriptions — like a C# diminished or an A7. The point is the chord name doesn’t really matter. What matters is the function.

It can be confusing because there are lots of chords with different names that end up basically doing the same thing. That diminished — that’s not in the 10 chord toolkit, right? But the C minor sure is. And the B is just like a D sharp diminished. So it’s not what the chord is, it’s what the chord does.

And you can see all that voice leading when you see the dominant chords crisscrossing in the hub. So when you ask yourself, is that an E minor with a major 7 or an E flat augmented? That’s the beauty of music theory, because the answer is just yes.
