Distortion comes in lots of flavors, but one thing they all share is that distortion adds high frequency content to your program material. Anything that ends up on there that wasn’t in here, we’re going to call harmonic distortion. Harmonic distortion because we’re not concerned with changes in level, unless that level gets too high.
Regardless of the medium, your equipment is like a bucket. It can only hold so much. When you take something that looks like a sine wave and you increase the level past what the container can hold, you end up with something that looks like a square wave.
