Do you ever get confused about major or minor chords? There’s a couple reasons why that might be. Somebody once probably told you that major chords are happy and minor chords are sad.

I mean as a starting point, that’s okay, but it’s pretty unscientific. Like right now, am I happy or sad? And then there’s this.

Every major chord has both a major and a minor third in it. Here’s a C major. This is a major third.

This is a minor third. But this happy sad thing is really trappy for another reason. Every single one of these is a major chord, but it’s the inversions, it’s the big jumps, it’s the distant keys that are creating drama.

And that drama is very, very easy to misinterpret as sad. So what’s the answer? The answer is to cut yourself a little slack.

It’s just not easy. You got to identify those chord tones. You got to put them in order.

Now if this was helpful, watch out for our upcoming music theory workshops. It’s really going to help you get started in music production. So follow us and save this post.
