Now you think what this video is about, but I don’t think you do. Because rhythm and harmony have a lot in common, and this tempo of 60 beats per minute is effectively one Hertz. One cycle per second.

Now let’s say we were to speed this up. At about 20 cycles per second, you’d start to perceive that as a note. And if we push this to a hundred times a second, or a thousand times a second, it might sound like this.

And this half note would be an octave higher at 2,000. A quarter note at 4k would be two octaves. And now friends, the plot thickens, because what about a triplet?

So let’s agree that a triplet is a three to one ratio. From here, the equivalent of double time, or an octave up, is 2k. That quarter note equivalent is 4k.

And you guessed it, three to one is about here, and five to one is about here. And so here’s the cool bit, because if you want to get this note down into this octave, you cut it in half. That gives you a five to two one two three four five one two three four five.

Or to drop the fifth an octave. One two three. A three to two ratio.

One two three. One two three. One two three.

One two three. So rhythm and harmony, not so different. You’re welcome, drummers.
