What’s a 2-5-1 progression got to do with baseball? A 2-5-1 progression comes a path to home play. This morning’s music theory gym request was a song called “Numb” by a band that I trust and it’s a really nice example of how this device gets used to move the goalposts.
Even I know that’s a different game. It’s a particularly effective device when home play is a moving target. So let’s say we’re in the key of C and we want to go to A.
We’ll call that a home run. Now the 2 and the 5 of A minor gives us this, but if instead of it being a home run, what if I told you there was a fifth bass and it’s here and this home run is just part of another 2-5-1 that’s going to G. And there’s a sixth bass and a seventh and an eighth and we can keep going until we land on our final home run.
Says who I don’t know about sports.
