This morning in gym we took a look at this song and one of the things we discussed was what key is it in? Because it’s not exactly in C major and it’s not exactly in C minor either. Although the E flat hits at a modal interchange.
But look more carefully at this F because what if instead of borrowing from E flat we borrow from F minor or A flat. And if you play that F harmonic minor scale starting from C you’ll end up with something that sounds a little like this. It’s called the Phrygian dominant scale with a little bit of Phrygian mixed in and you can share it with someone who belongs in a big kitchen class.
