Under normal use, I tell my students they want to tickle the meter on the compressor. And what I mean by that is this. You want to see the meter engage and then completely disengage.
The threshold needs to be set high enough. The attack and particularly the release need to be set fast enough. So the compressor recovers into hands-off mode.
You’ll see the meter dancing around and that’s what I mean by tickling it. Until you do that, you’re not going to hear what it’s doing. And that tickle spot is probably the sweet spot anyway.
