Beat Building Jams

Chapter 2
Found Sound Beat
Record sounds from your environment and build a beat from what you capture. Five minutes to record, ten to produce.
Asset not found in manifest.
Your environment is full of rhythm. Pens clicking, doors closing, fans humming, keys jingling. This exercise makes you hear the music that already exists around you — then build with it.
What You Need
- A phone or portable recorder
- Any DAW
- A sampler for chopping and triggering recordings
The Exercise
- Set a timer for 5 minutes. Walk around your space — home, studio, outside — and record sounds. Aim for variety: percussive hits, sustained tones, textures.
- Import your recordings into your DAW.
- Set a timer for 10 minutes. Build a beat using only your found sounds.
- If working in a group: share your raw recordings with others before the build phase. Everyone works with the same pool of sounds.
What to Listen For
- Which sounds naturally suggest rhythm? Which suggest melody or texture?
- Did anything surprise you — a sound that worked in a way you did not expect?
- How does the “realness” of found sounds compare to sample library material?
- Where do you hear naturally occurring rhythmic patterns in everyday sounds?
