Chapter 3
Kick Displacement Grid
Fixed hi-hats and snare. Move one kick through all 16 grid positions and hear how placement defines groove.
Asset not found in manifest.
Same hi-hats. Same snare. One kick — and you are going to put it in every possible position. This exercise isolates the single most powerful variable in groove: where the kick lands.
What You Need
- Any DAW with a MIDI editor or step sequencer
- Basic drum samples (kick, snare, hi-hat)
The Exercise
- Set up a 1-bar pattern at 90–100 BPM:
- Hi-hats on every 16th note
- Snare on beats 2 and 4
- Place one kick on position 1 (the downbeat). Listen. Feel the groove.
- Move the kick to position 2. Listen again. Notice what changed.
- Repeat for all 16 positions. Take notes — which positions feel heavy? Which feel syncopated? Which feel wrong?
- Pick your 4 favorite positions. Combine them into a 4-bar pattern (one kick position per bar, or combine multiple positions in one bar).
What to Listen For
- Positions 1, 5, 9, 13 (quarter notes) — these feel grounded and predictable
- Positions on the “e” and “a” (even-numbered 16ths) — these create syncopation
- How does the snare relationship change when the kick moves? The snare stays put, but the feel of the snare changes
- Which positions make you nod your head differently?
