Chapter 5
The Four-Track Limit
Four tracks. Four bars. Twenty minutes. Find out what you consider essential.
Asset not found in manifest.
Constraints clarify priorities. When you can only use four tracks, every decision matters. This exercise forces you to identify what is essential to your musical idea — and what is decoration.
What You Need
- Any DAW
- Any sounds you want
- Discipline (you will want a fifth track — resist)
The Exercise
- Set a timer for 20 minutes.
- Build a 4-bar loop using exactly 4 tracks. No bouncing tracks together to cheat the limit.
- Each track is one element. Could be a drum pattern, a bass line, a chord progression, a vocal, a texture — your call.
- When the timer ends, listen back. Then discuss (or journal):
- What four elements did you choose, and why?
- What did you want to add but could not?
- Could you remove one track and still have a complete idea?
What to Listen For
- Which element carries the most weight? If you mute it, does the beat collapse?
- Did the limitation change what you prioritized compared to your usual workflow?
- How much arrangement can you imply with just four elements?
- Where did you spend your 20 minutes — sound selection, programming, mixing, or something else?
