Moodboard Beat
Create a mood concept first — a feeling, a scene, a color palette. Use that concept to guide every production decision.

Start with a feeling, not a sound. This exercise puts concept before craft — you define the emotional target first, then make every production decision in service of that target. The mood is the brief.
What You Need
- Any DAW
- A way to define your mood (images, words, colors, a scene — whatever works for you)
- Any sounds and instruments
The Exercise
- Define your mood. Spend 5 minutes on this before touching your DAW. Options:
- Write 3–5 words that describe the feeling (e.g., “foggy,” “tense,” “late night,” “warm,” “fractured”)
- Find 3–5 images that capture the vibe
- Describe a scene or setting
- Pick a color palette
- Set a timer for 25 minutes.
- Build a beat that serves the mood. Every decision filters through your concept:
- Sound selection: does this kick match the mood?
- Processing: should this reverb be warm or cold?
- Arrangement: does the pacing reflect the feeling?
- Tempo: what BPM lives in this mood?
- When done, play it for someone (or listen back after a break). Does the beat communicate the mood without you explaining it?
What to Listen For
- Did the mood concept speed up your decision-making? (It should — it gives you a filter for yes/no choices.)
- Where did you deviate from the mood? Was that a good instinct or a distraction?
- Can a listener identify your mood without being told? If not, where is the disconnect?
- How does starting with concept compare to starting with sound?
