Chapter 4
Body Percussion Beat
Make rhythms with your body — claps, snaps, chest thumps, table hits. Record them and build a beat. No sample libraries.
Asset not found in manifest.
Before drum machines, there were hands. This exercise strips production back to the most fundamental instrument you own — your body. Every sound in your beat comes from physical human percussion.
What You Need
- A microphone (even a phone mic works)
- Any DAW
- Your hands, feet, chest, mouth, and whatever surfaces are nearby
The Exercise
- Spend 5 minutes experimenting with body percussion sounds: claps, finger snaps, chest thumps, thigh slaps, foot stomps, table hits, mouth clicks, beatbox sounds.
- Record your sounds — aim for at least 6 distinct timbres.
- Set a timer for 15 minutes. Build a beat using only your recorded body percussion.
- Processing is allowed: EQ, compression, reverb, pitch shifting. But no sample library sounds.
What to Listen For
- Body percussion has natural dynamics and inconsistency — does that make the beat feel more alive?
- Which body sounds translate well to “kick,” “snare,” and “hat” roles?
- How does the intimacy of body-sourced sounds affect the overall feel?
- Where do you hear the room in your recordings? Is that a feature or a problem?
