You already hear it…

Music theory is the language of songs. You already know when a chord change works. You feel tension and release. You recognize a bridge when it hits. But when someone asks “what key is this in?” or “is that a ii-V?” — you freeze.

This class fixes that. Musician Basics is where producers, vocalists, and instrumentalists learn to speak music fluently—without needing to read every note on the page.

We cover harmony, song structure, and the vocabulary that connects them—so you can understand what you’re hearing, talk about it with collaborators, and make intentional choices in your music. No classical background required. Just bring your ears.

At the conclusion of this course you should expect to:

  • Recognize chord types, functions, and how they move through progressions
  • Identify song sections by ear (verse, chorus, bridge, etc.)
  • Play chords and inversions on a keyboard
  • Hear harmonic motion in your favorite songs
  • Ask better questions in Music Theory Gym

This class is for you if:

  • You’re curious about how music works but don’t know where to start
  • You make beats, sing, or play by ear—and want words for what you hear
  • You’ve avoided “theory” because it felt like a foreign language
  • You want to follow along when musicians talk about arrangement, structure, chords, and keys
  • You like Beat Kitchen music theory videos

Not for you if:

  • You already have formal training and want advanced concepts
  • You’re looking for instrument technique or DAW production skills

Try instead: DAW Core Skills · Beat Building Jam · Effects, Synth & Mixing Primer

Format: Live on Discord—small group (camera optional)

Prerequisites: Just a keyboard nearby. This class is suitable for anyone who likes discussing music (including beginners).
